Where the Network ends: Infrastructure and Delay Tolerant Networks in a Hybrid Future Internet

چکیده
Traffic carried by mobile networks doubles per year, resulting in congestion and high cost for network upgrades. With the widespread integration of sensing devices with the Internet—in the so-called “Internet of Things”—infrastructurebased networks are becoming an increasingly expensive way of keeping up with communication needs due to the high volume of sensing data. Delay Tolerant Networks provide new communication possibilities for the transport of sensing data, as they allow for communication without any infrastructure—based on mobileto-mobile communication and store-carry-forward mechanisms. Performing a cooperative hybrid approach of today’s networks with DTNs has empirically shown to be promising, but is scarcely understood. In this talk we give an overview on our work in hybrid networks, based on overlay networks and Delay Tolerant Networks. Our approach allows for the integration of opportunistic mobileto-mobile communication with partial infrastructure access to inexpensively route delay-tolerant data.

Energy-Aware Probabilistic Epidemic Forwarding Method in Heterogeneous Delay Tolerant Networks
Due to the increasing use of wireless communications, infrastructure-less networks such as Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) should be highly considered. DTN is most suitable where there is an intermittent connection between communicating nodes such as wireless mobile ad hoc network nodes. In general, a message sending node in DTN copies the message and transmits it to nodes which it encounters. A...
متن کاملRouting in hybrid Delay Tolerant Networks
Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) have emerged as communication paradigm for providing endto-end routing based on opportunistic forwarding, without the need for costly infrastructure. Nevertheless, empirical studies have shown that opportunistically integrating encountered infrastructure—e. g. Internet access via WiFi—into hybrid DTNs can significantly boost routing performance. However, designing...

Today’s Internet is characterized by heterogeneity, both at node– (e.g., smart phones, PDAs) and network level (e.g., wired/wireless infrastructure-based and ad-hoc networks, cellular-based networks). As the networks are becoming increasingly heterogeneous, it is expected that future internetworks will interconnect different types of network including wired, infrastructure-based wireless and in...

Abstract Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is a particular type of mobile ad hoc network in which vehicles communicate between themselves using wireless antenna. Due to unique characteristics of VANETs (e.g. high mobility of nodes and dynamic topology), routing is one of the challenging tasks in such networks. Consequently, delay tolerant networks which consider the disconnect nature of...

Providing wireless networking to vehicles has been identified as a near-term goal by the automotive industry in the support of basic Internet access as well as an enabler to a variety of safety enhancement applications. Network connectivity to on-board computers can be provided via existing mobile telephony; however, these systems rely on both expensive infrastructure (cell towers) and a strong...
